MEETING 2 "SIMPLE PAST TENSE"

The next material is Simple Past Tense! Enjoy! ❤

*****

Simple past tense, sometimes called preterite, is used to talk about events that were completed in the past before now. A simple past is the basic form of past tense in English. Events can occur not long ago or long ago, and the duration of the event is not important.

EXAMPLES

  • John Cabot sailed to America in 1498.
  • My father was edited last year.
  • He lived in Fiji in 1976.
  • We crossed the Channel yesterday.

You always use simple past when saying when something happens. So, this tense is related to certain past time expressions.

frequency: often, sometimes, always
I sometimes walked home at lunchtime.
- I often brought my lunch to school.

specific or clear time: last week, when I was a child, yesterday, six weeks ago
- We saw a good movie last week.
- Yesterday, I arrived in Geneva.
- She finished her work at seven o'clock
- I went to the theater last night

unspecified or unclear time: the other day, ages ago, a long time ago
- People lived in caves a long time ago.
- She played the piano when she was a child.

Be careful: Simple past in English might look tense in your language, but the meaning might be different.

NOTES FOR POSITIVE, NEGATIVE FORM, AND QUESTIONS

POSITIVE

The positive form of the simple past tense is very simple.
  • I was in Japan last year
  • She had a headache yesterday.
  • We did our homework last night.

NEGATIVE AND QUESTIONS

For simple past negative forms and questions from "to do" as ordinary verbs, use the auxiliary "did". Example: We didn't do our homework last night.
The negative form of "have" in simple past is usually formed using the auxiliary "did", but sometimes only by adding notes or abbreviations (contraction) "n't".
The question form of "have" in simple past usually uses the auxiliary "did".

EXAMPLES

  • They weren't in Rio last summer.
  • We didn't have any money.
  • Were they in Iceland last January?
  • Did you have a bicycle when you were young?
  • Did you do much climbing in Switzerland?

MEETING 1 "SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE"

Hello! See me again, guys!
In this post I will discuss about one of the basic tense that you should know. What is that? Yes, simple present tense.

*****

The simple present tense is one of several forms of present tense in English. This tense is used to describe habits, unchanging situations, general truths, and fixed schedules. Simple present tense is very easy to form. Just use the basic words of the verb: (I take, you take, we take, they take). The third-person singular uses the -s at the end of the base words. (he takes, she takes).

SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE USED:

  • To show habits, general truths, repeated actions or unchanging situations, emotions, and expectations: I smoke (habit); I work in London (unchanging situation); London is a large city (general truth)
  • To give instructions or directions: You walk for two hundred meters, then you turn left.
  • To state a fixed schedule in the present and future: Your exam starts at 9:00.
  • To declare a future time after conjunction: after, when, before, as soon as, until: He'll give it to you when you come next Saturday.
Be Careful! Simple Present is not used to state actions or events that are happening right now.

EXAMPLES:

  • For habitsHe drinks tea at breakfast.
  • For repeat actions or incidents: We take the bus every morning.
  • For general truth: Water freezes zero degrees.
  • For instructions or directions: Open the package and pour the contents into hot water.
  • For fixed schedule: His mother arrives tomorrow.
  • Together with future tense patterns: He will see you before he leaves.

NOTES ABOUT SIMPLE PRESENT, THIRD SINGLE PERSON:

  • For third-person singles, the verb always ends with -s: he wants, she needs, he gives, she thinks.
  • Negative forms and questions using DOES (= auxiliary form 'DO' for third people) + infinitive of verbs. He wants ice cream. Does he want strawberry? He does not want vanilla.
  • Verbs that end with -y: Third-person forms change -y to -ies: fly -> flies, cry -> cries Exception: If there are vowels before -y: play -> plays, pray -> prays
  • Add -es to verbs that end with: -ss, -x, -sh, -ch: he passes, she catches, he fixes, it pushes

EXAMPLES:

  • He goes to school every morning.
  • She understands English.
  • It mixes the sand and the water.

MEDIA
DEFINITION OF MEDIA
Do you know what is media?
Based on Wikipedia, media is a tool or intermediary that functions to send messages or information from the source to the recipient of the message.

KINDS OF MEDIA
Media is divided by four; Print Media, Sound Media, Visual Media, and Digital Media.

Print Media

Print media is the printed a version of information broadcasting before the existence of high technology today. Some technologies included in print media are newspapers, magazine, tabloid, brochure, newsletter, billboard, flyer, poster, book, advertising, etc. This kind of media also has advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages:
  • Print media is an effective way to spread the news or advertisement.
  • Print media is simple to use.
  • The information will become more durable.
Disadvantages:
  • Print media is wasteful of money. We all know that print media needs papers in the use, so we have to pay some money to buy it.
  • Print media is not environment-friendly because we use papers that made from tree fibers.
  • Print media will be trash when we have already read the information in the paper, the paper will be trash.
  • Long-time needed to write, to produce, and to deliver them

Sound media becomes one of the media that we know today. What is meant by sound media? Sound media is a media tool whose message content is only received through the sense of hearing. In other words, sound media is a form of media communication that uses audio or sound recordings as a medium to convey information. Sound media also called audio media. The examples of this kind of media are radio, tape recorder, television, voice recording, MP3, iPod, etc.

  • Sound media is easy to operate.
  • Sound media is clearer to remember.
  • Easy to get the attention of the participants.
  • Participants feel more involved.
  • Useful in distant learning.
  • Sound media can improve listening skill.
  • It helps in motivating creative thinking and increasing imagination.
Disadvantages:
  • It is easier to lose focus.
  • Sound media probably makes students uninterested (in the study process).
  • People maybe misinterpret the intent of the ideas.

Visual Media

Visual media means that all teaching assistants that can be used in the learning process can be enjoyed through the eyes. It plays a very valuable role in the learning activity. It can facilitate understanding and strengthen memory. The examples of visual media are pictures, television, chart, diagram, map, sketch, poster, Virtual Reality (VR), and so on.

Advantages:
  • Visual media is interesting.
  • Repeatable: can be read many times by saving or flipping it.
  • Visual media can make people know the contents of the news with a deeper analysis.
  • Visual media can make people think more specific about the contents of the writing.
  • Visual media is effective for illiterate recipients.
Disadvantages:
  • Visual media without audio, it is in the form of writing, of course, can’t be heard. So it is not detailed enough of the material presented.
  • It is costly because if you use print media, you must print and send it before it can be enjoyed by society.

Digital Media

Media that utilizing technology progression as intermediary media. Digital media is the newest tool compared to print media, sound media, and visual media. As we know, there are so many types of digital media such as blogspot.com, wordpress.com, website, e-book, e-mail, social media, online learning class, etc.

Advantages:
  • We can get information easier.
  • We can communicate with people faster and effectively.
  • We can keep in touch with our friends all over the world.

Disadvantages :
  • If we spend a lot of time on digital media, it will affect our health.

  • We can manipulate the news easily and can spread the hoax.
